أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ الْمَوْصِلِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ الْقَعْقَاعِ كُوفِيٌّ عَنْ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ كُوفِيٌّ وَهُوَ ابْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُّ الصَّدَقَةِ أَعْظَمُ أَجْرًا قَالَ «تَصَدَّقْ وَأَنْتَ صَحِيحٌ شَحِيحٌ تَخْشَى الْفَقْرَ وَتَأْمُلُ الْبَقَاءَ وَلَا تُمْهِلْ حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْحُلْقُومَ» قُلْتَ لِفُلَانٍ كَذَا وَقَدْ كَانَ لِفُلَانٍ

Translation

✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of God, which charity is greatest in reward?" He said, "Give charity while you are healthy and covetous, fearing poverty and hoping for long life. Do not delay until, when it reaches the throat, you say, 'For so-and-so is such, and for so-and-so is such,' though it already belongs to so-and-so."
