أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ قَالَ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا الْأَشْعَثُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ قَالَ

كَانَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ قَوْمٍ خُصُومَةٌ فَاخْتَصَمْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ شَاهِدَاكَ أَوْ يَمِينُهُ فَقُلْتُ إِذًا يَحْلِفُ وَلَا يُبَالِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ لِيَسْتَحِقَّ فِيهَا مَالًا وَهُوَ فِيهَا فَاجِرٌ لَقِيَ اللهَ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ» فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَعَالَى تَصْدِيقَ ذَلِكَ {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا} [آل عمران 77] الْآيَةَ

Translation

✧ There was a dispute between me and some people, so we brought our case to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: "Your two witnesses or his oath." I said: "Then he will swear and not care." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever swears an oath to wrongfully claim wealth and is false in it will meet Allah while He is angry with him." Allah the Exalted then revealed in confirmation of that: {Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price} [Al 'Imran 77]—the verse.
