أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدٌ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ
أَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَيْنَ خَيْبَرَ وَالْمَدِينَةِ ثَلَاثًا يَبْنِي بِصَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ حُيَيٍّ فَدَعَوْتُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ إِلَى وَلِيمَةٍ فَمَا كَانَ فِيهَا مِنْ خُبْزٍ وَلَا لَحْمٍ وَأُمِرَ بِالْأَنْطَاعِ فَأُلْقِيَ عَلَيْهَا مِنَ التَّمْرِ وَالْأَقِطِ وَالسَّمْنِ فَكَانَتْ وَلِيمَتَهُ فَقَالَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ إِحْدَى أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَوْ مِمَّا مَلَكَتْ يَمِينُهُ فَقَالَ إِنْ حَجَبَهَا فَهِيَ مِنْ أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَحْجُبْهَا فَهِيَ مِمَّا مَلَكَتْ يَمِينُهُ فَلَمَّا ارْتَحَلَ وَطَّأَ لَهَا خَلْفَهُ وَمَدَّ الْحِجَابَ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ النَّاسِ

✧ The Prophet ﷺ stayed between Khaybar and Madinah for three days consummating his marriage with Safiyyah bt. Huyayy. I invited the Muslims to a wedding feast, but there was no bread or meat in it. He ordered leather mats to be spread, and dates, dried curd, and clarified butter were placed on them. That was his wedding feast. The Muslims said: 'Is she one of the Mothers of the Believers or one of those whom his right hand possesses?' He said: 'If he veils her, then she is one of the Mothers of the Believers, and if he does not veil her, then she is one of those whom his right hand possesses.' When he departed, he seated her behind him and extended the veil between her and the people.
