أَخْبَرَنِي عِمْرَانُ بْنُ بَكَّارِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ الْحِمْصِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّ أَبَا حُذَيْفَةَ بْنَ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ شَمْسٍ وَكَانَ مِمَّنْ شَهِدَا بَدْرًا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ تَبَنَّى سَالِمًا وَأَنْكَحَهُ ابْنَةَ أَخِيهِ هِنْدَ بِنْتَ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ وَهُوَ مَوْلًى لِامْرَأَةٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ كَمَا تَبَنَّى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ زَيْدًا وَكُلُّ مَنْ تَبَنَّى رَجُلًا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ دَعَاهُ النَّاسُ إِلَيْهِ وَوَرِثَ مِنْ مِيرَاثِهِ حَتَّى أَنْزَلَ اللهُ فِي ذَلِكَ {ادْعُوهُمْ لِآبَائِهِمْ هُوَ أَقْسَطُ عِنْدَ اللهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَعْلَمُوا آبَاءَهُمْ فَإِخْوَانُكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ وَمَوَالِيكُمْ} [الأحزاب 5] فَمَنْ لَمْ يُعْلَمْ لَهُ أَبٌ كَانَ مَوْلًى وَأَخًا فِي الدِّينِ

✧ From 'A'ishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, that Abu Hudhayfah b. 'Utbah b. Rabi'ah b. 'Abd Shams, who was among those who witnessed Badr with the Prophet ﷺ, adopted Salim and married him to his niece Hind bt. al-Walid b. Rabi'ah, while he was a client of a woman from the Ansar, just as the Prophet ﷺ adopted Zayd. Everyone who adopted a man in the Jahiliyyah, the people called him by his [adoptive father's] name and he inherited from his estate, until Allah sent down concerning that: {Call them by their fathers; that is more just in the sight of Allah. But if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in religion and your clients.} [al-Ahzab 5]. So whoever's father was not known was a client and a brother in religion.
