أَخْبَرَنَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ عُثْمَانَ يَقُولُ اجْتَنِبُوا الْخَمْرَ فَإِنَّهَا أُمُّ الْخَبَائِثِ إِنَّهُ كَانَ رَجُلٌ مِمَّنْ خَلَا قَبْلَكُمْ يَتَعَبَّدُ فَعَلِقَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ غَوِيَّةٌ فَأَرْسَلَتْ إِلَيْهِ جَارِيَتَهَا فَقَالَتْ لَهُ أَنَا أَدْعُوكَ لِلشَّهَادَةِ فَانْطَلَقَ مَعَ جَارِيَتِهَا فَطَفِقَتْ كُلَّمَا دَخَلَ بَابًا أَغْلَقَتْهُ دُونَهُ حَتَّى أَفْضَى إِلَى امْرَأَةٍ وَضِيئَةٍ عِنْدَهَا غُلَامٌ وَبَاطِيَةُ خَمْرٍ فَقَالَتْ إِنِّي وَاللهِ مَا دَعْوَتُكَ لِلشَّهَادَةِ وَلَكِنْ دَعْوَتُكَ لِتَقَعَ عَلَيَّ أَوْ تَشْرَبَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْخَمْرِ كَأْسًا أَوْ تَقْتُلَ هَذَا الْغُلَامَ قَالَ فَاسْقِينِي مِنْ هَذَا الْخَمْرِ كَأْسًا فَسَقَتْهُ كَأْسًا فَقَالَ زِيدُونِي فَلَمْ يَرِمْ حَتَّى وَقَعَ عَلَيْهَا وَقَتَلَ النَّفْسَ فَاجْتَنِبُوا الْخَمْرَ؛ فَإِنَّهَا وَاللهِ لَا يَجْتَمِعُ الْإِيمَانُ وَإِدْمَانُ الْخَمْرِ إِلَّا أَوْشَكَ أَنْ يُخْرِجَ أَحَدُهُمَا صَاحِبَهُ

✧ I heard Uthman say: Avoid wine, for it is the mother of all evils. There was a man among those before you who devoted himself to worship. A wanton woman became infatuated with him, so she sent her slave-girl to him, saying: “I invite you to bear witness.” He went with her slave-girl, and whenever he entered a door, she locked it behind him until he came to a beautiful woman, with whom was a boy and a jug of wine. She said: “By Allah, I did not invite you to bear witness, but I invited you to lie with me, or to drink a cup of this wine, or to kill this boy.” He said: “Give me a cup of this wine.” She gave him a cup, and he said: “Give me more.” He did not stop until he lay with her and killed a soul. So avoid wine, for by Allah, faith and addiction to wine do not combine except that one of them is about to expel the other.
