أَخْبَرَنِي هِلَالُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنْ جَابِرٍ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْتَقَ غُلَامًا لَهُ عَنْ دُبُرٍ فَاحْتَاجَ مَوْلَاهُ فَأَمَرَ بِبَيْعِهِ فَبَاعَهُ بِثَمَانِمِائَةٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَنْفِقْهَا عَلَى عِيَالِكَ فَإِنَّمَا الصَّدَقَةُ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ»

Translation

✧ from the Prophet ﷺ that a man freed a slave boy of his by tadbir (arranging for his freedom after the owner's death), then his master became needy, so he ordered him to be sold. He sold him for eight hundred, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Spend it on your dependents, for charity is only from surplus wealth. Begin with those you support."
