عَمْرُو بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ الْحَارِثِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مَحْبُوبٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ قَالَ
كَتَبَ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ إِلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ كِتَابًا فِيهِ وَقَسَمَ أَبُوكَ لَكَ الْخُمُسَ كُلَّهُ وَإِنَّمَا سَهْمُ أَبِيكَ كَسَهْمِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَفِيهِ حَقُّ اللهِ وَحَقُّ الرَّسُولِ وَذِي الْقُرْبَى وَالْيَتَامَى وَالْمَسَاكِينِ وَابْنِ السَّبِيلِ فَمَا أَكْثَرَ خُصَمَاءِ ابْنِكَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَكَيْفَ يَنْجُو مَنْ كَثُرَتْ خُصَمَاؤُهُ وَإِظْهَارُكَ الْمَعَازِفَ وَالْمَزَامِيرَ بِدْعَةٌ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ وَلَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ أَبْعَثَ إِلَيْكَ مَنْ يَجُزُّ جُمَّتَكَ جُمَّةَ السَّوْءِ

✧ ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAziz wrote to ʿUmar b. al-Walid a letter, in which he said: "Your father allotted the entire fifth to you, but your father's share is only like the share of any man among the Muslims. In it is the right of God, the right of the Messenger, the near relatives, the orphans, the needy, and the wayfarer. How numerous will be your son's adversaries on the Day of Resurrection! How can one whose adversaries are many be saved? Your displaying musical instruments and reed pipes is an innovation in Islam. I have resolved to send someone to you who will cut off your forelock—an evil forelock."
