أَخْبَرَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبَايَةَ بْنِ رِفَاعَةَ عَنْ جَدِّهِ رَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ قَالَ

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِذِي الْحُلَيْفَةِ مِنْ تِهَامَةَ فَأَصَبْنَا غَنَمًا وَإِبِلًا فَعَجِلَ الْقَوْمُ يَعْنِي قَبْلَ الْقِسْمَةِ فَأَغْلُوا بِهِ الْقُدُورَ فَجَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأَمَرَ بِهَا فَأُكْفِئَتْ ثُمَّ عَدَلَ عَشْرًا مِنَ الْغَنَمِ بِجَزُورٍ ثُمَّ إِنَّ بَعِيرًا نَدَّ وَلَيْسَ فِي الْقَوْمِ إِلَّا خَيْلٌ يَسِيرَةٌ فَرَمَاهُ رَجُلٌ بِسَهْمٍ فَحَبَسَهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «إِنَّ لِهَذِهِ الْبَهَائِمِ أَوَابِدَ كَأَوَابِدِ الْوَحْشِ فَمَا غَلَبَكُمْ فَاصْنَعُوا بِهِ هَكَذَا»

✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Dhū al-Ḥulayfah, in the direction of Tihāmah, and we obtained sheep and camels. The people hurried—meaning before the division—and put the cooking pots on the fire to boil. The Prophet ﷺ came and ordered that they be overturned. Then he made ten sheep equal to one camel. Then a camel bolted, and the people had only a few horses with them. A man shot it with an arrow and stopped it. The Prophet ﷺ said: "These animals have wild tendencies like those of wild game, so if one of them gets the better of you, do this to it."
