✧ If someone performs 'Umrah, does it count as Hajj?

أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ أَرَادَ الْحَجَّ عَامَ نَزَلَ الْحَجَّاجُ بِابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ كَائِنٌ بَيْنَهُمْ قِتَالٌ وَإِنَّا نَخَافُ أَنْ يَصُدُّوكَ فَقَالَ

لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ إِذًا أَصْنَعُ كَمَا صَنَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكُمْ أَنِّي قَدْ أَوْجَبْتُ عُمْرَةً ثُمَّ خَرَجَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ بِظَاهِرِ الْبَيْدَاءِ قَالَ «مَا شَأْنُ الْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ إِلَّا وَاحِدٌ أَشْهَدُ أَنِّي قَدْ أَوْجَبْتُ حَجًّا مَعَ عُمْرَتِي وَأَهْدَى هَدْيًا اشْتَرَاهُ بِقُدَيْدٍ ثُمَّ انْطَلَقَ يُهِلُّ بِهِمَا جَمِيعًا حَتَّى قَدِمَ مَكَّةَ فَطَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ وَبِالصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ وَلَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ وَلَمْ يَنْحَرْ وَلَمْ يَحْلِقْ وَلَمْ يُقَصَّرْ وَلَمْ يَحْلِلْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ حَرُمَ مِنْهُ حَتَّى كَانَ يَوْمُ النَّحْرِ فَنَحَرَ وَحَلَقَ وَرَأَى أَنْ قَدْ قَضَى طَوَافَ الْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ بِطَوَافِهِ الْأَوَّلِ» وَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ كَذَلِكَ فَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ

✧ Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example. In that case, I will do as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did. I call you to witness that I have made ʿUmrah obligatory upon myself. Then he set out until when he was at the high ground of Baidāʾ, he said: "The matter of Hajj and ʿUmrah is but one. I bear witness that I have made Hajj obligatory along with my ʿUmrah and I have brought a sacrificial animal that he bought at Qudaid. Then he proceeded reciting the talbiyah for both together until he reached Makkah. He performed tawāf of the House and of Ṣafā and Marwah, and did not add to that, and did not slaughter, and did not shave, and did not trim, and did not exit ihrām from any of the restrictions until the Day of Sacrifice, when he slaughtered and shaved, and he held that he had completed the tawāf of Hajj and ʿUmrah with his first tawāf." And Ibn ʿUmar said: Thus did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
