أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ بَغْدَادِيٌّ مُخَرَّمِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو هِشَامٍ وَاسْمُهُ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْمَخْزُومِيُّ ثِقَةٌ بَصْرِيٌّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ
خَطَبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ فَرَضَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْحَجَّ» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ أَفِي كُلِّ عَامٍ؟ فَسَكَتَ عَنْهُ حَتَّى أَعَادَهُ ثَلَاثًا فَقَالَ «لَوْ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ لَوَجَبَتْ وَلَوْ وَجَبَتْ مَا قُمْتُمْ بِهَا ذَرُونِي مَا تَرَكْتُكُمْ فَإِنَّمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ بِكَثْرَةِ سُؤَالِهِمْ وَاخْتِلَافِهِمْ عَلَى أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ فَإِذَا أَمَرْتُكُمْ بِالشَّيْءِ فَخُذُوا بِهِ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ وَإِذَا نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْ شَيْءٍ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave a khutbah and said: “Allah has made Hajj obligatory upon you.” A man said: “Every year?” He remained silent until he repeated it three times, then said: “Had I said yes, it would have become obligatory, and had it become obligatory you would not be able to do it. Leave me as long as I leave you, for those before you perished only because of their excessive questioning and their disagreement with their prophets. When I command you to do something, do as much of it as you can, and when I forbid you from something, avoid it.”
