أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ شُعَيْبٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ
نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْوِصَالِ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَإِنَّكَ تُوَاصِلُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «وَأَيُّكُمْ مِثْلِي إِنِّي أَبِيتُ يُطْعِمُنِي رَبِّي وَيَسْقِينِي» فَلَمَّا أَبَوْا أَنْ يَنْتَهُوا وَاصَلَ بِهِمْ يَوْمًا ثُمَّ يَوْمًا ثُمَّ رَأَوُا الْهِلَالَ فَقَالَ «لَو تَأَخَّرَ لَزِدْتُكُمْ» كَالتَّنْكِيلِ بِهِمْ حِينَ أَبَوْا أَنْ يَنْتَهُوا

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade continuous fasting. A man among the Muslims said, "But you practice continuous fasting, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Which of you is like me? I spend the night while my Lord feeds me and gives me drink." When they refused to stop, he continued fasting with them for a day, then another day, then they saw the new moon. He said, "If it had been delayed, I would have increased for you," as a punishment for them when they refused to stop.
