أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي حُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ يَقُولُ
سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ يَقُولُ «إِنِّي صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَصُمْ» وَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى أَهْلِ الْعَوَالِي فَقَالَ «مَنْ أَكَلَ فَلَا يَأْكُلْ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَكَلَ فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ» قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ هَذَا الْكَلَامُ الْأَخِيرُ خَطَأٌ لَا نَعْلَمُ أَنَّ أَحَدًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الزُّهْرِيِّ تَابَعَهُ عَلَيْهِ خَالَفَهُ قُتَيْبَةُ

✧ I heard the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Ashura saying, "I am fasting, so whoever wishes may fast." He sent to the people of al-Awali and said, "Whoever has eaten, let him not eat; and whoever has not eaten, let him complete his fast." Abu Abd al-Rahman said: "This last statement is an error. We do not know that anyone from the companions of al-Zuhri followed him on it. Qutaybah differed from him."
