Recommendation to fast the day of ʿAshūrāʾ

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْخُزَاعِيِّ

عَنْ عَمِّهِ أَنَّهُمْ غَدَوْا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَقَدْ أَصَابُوا مِنَ الْغَدَاءِ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ «أَصُمْتُمُ الْيَوْمَ؟» قَالَ قُلْنَا قَدْ أَصَبْنَا مِنَ الْغَدَاءِ فَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نُتِمَّ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِنَا وَقَالَ لَهُمْ أَتِمُّوا بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِكُمْ

Translation

✧ About his uncle, that they visited the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Ashura and they had had breakfast. So he asked them, "Are you fasting today?" They said, "We had breakfast, so he ordered us to complete the rest of our day and said to them, 'Complete the rest of your day.'"
