Recommendation to fast the day of ʿAshūrāʾ

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْمِنْهَالِ الْخُزَاعِيِّ عَنْ عَمِّهِ
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِأَسْلَمَ «صُومُوا الْيَوْمَ» قَالُوا إِنَّا كُنَّا قَدْ أَكَلْنَا قَالَ «صُومُوا بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِكُمْ يَعْنِي يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ» خَالَفَهُ سَعِيدٌ
Translation

- Muḥammad b. al-Muthanná > Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar > Shuʿbah > Qatādah > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. al-Minhāl al-Khuzāʿī from his uncle
✧ The Prophet ﷺ said to Aslam, "Fast today." They said, "We have already eaten." He said, "Fast the rest of your day," meaning the day of Ashura. Sa'id differed from him.
