أَخْبَرَنَاَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ بصري عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ قَالَ

حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ وَكَانَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ وَكَانَ شَاعِرًا وَكَانَ صَدُوقًا عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إنَّكَ تَقُومُ اللَّيْلَ وَتَصُومُ النَّهَارَ لَا صَامَ مَنْ صَامَ الْأَبَدَ صُمْ مَنْ كل شَّهْرِ ثَلَاثَةُ أَيَّامٍ قُلْتُ زِدني قال «صُمْ مَنْ كل شهر خَمْسَةَ أَيَّامٍ» قُلْتُ زِدني قَالَ «أَفْضَلُ الصِّيَامِ صَوْمَ دَاوُدَ يَصُومُ يَوْمًا وَيُفْطِرُ يَوْمًا وَلَا يَفِرَّ إِذَا لَاقَى»

✧ Abu al-Abbas narrated to me, and he was a man from the people of Sham, a poet, and truthful, from Abdullah b. Amr, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "You stand in prayer at night and fast during the day. No one who fasts forever has fasted. Fast three days of every month." I said, "Increase for me." He said, "Fast five days of every month." I said, "Increase for me." He said, "The best fasting is the fast of Dawud: he fasts one day and breaks his fast the next day, and he does not flee when he meets the enemy."
