✧ Fasting one day and breaking the fast the next day, and discussing the variation of words used by the narrators in reporting the incident of Abdullah bin Amr bin al-Aas.

أَخْبَرَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ وَهُوَ ابْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قُلْتُ أَيْ عَمِّ حَدِّثْنِي عَمَّا قَالَ

لَكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي إِنِّي قَدْ كُنْتُ أَجْمَعْتُ عَلَى أَنْ أَجْتَهِدَ اجْتِهَادًا شَدِيدًا حَتَّى قُلْتُ لَأَصُومَنَّ الدَّهْرَ وَلَأَقْرَأَنَّ الْقُرْآنَ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ فَسَمِعَ بِذَلِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَتَانِي حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ فِي دَارِي فَقَالَ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ قُلْتَ لَأَصُومَنَّ الدَّهْرَ فَقُلْتُ قَدْ قُلْتُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «فَلَا تَفْعَلْ صُمْ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ» قُلْتُ إِنِّي أَقْوَى عَلَى أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ «فَصُمْ مِنَ الْجُمُعَةِ يَوْمَيْنِ الِاثْنَيْنِ وَالْخَمِيسَ» قُلْتُ إِنِّي أَقْوَى عَلَى أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكِ قَالَ «فَصُمْ صِيَامَ دَاوُدَ فَإِنَّهُ أَعْدَلُ الصِّيَامِ عِنْدَ اللهِ يَوْمًا صَائِمًا وَيَوْمًا مُفْطِرًا وَإِنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا وَعَدَ لَمْ يُخْلِفْ وَإِذَا لَاقَى لَمْ يَفِرَّ»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "O son of my brother, I had resolved to strive hard in worship, so much so that I said, 'I will certainly fast the entire year and read the Quran every day and night.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard about that and came to me until he entered upon me in my house and said, 'It has reached me that you said, "I will certainly fast the entire year."' I said, 'I did say that, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Then do not do so. Fast three days of every month.' I said, 'I am able to do more than that.' He said, 'Then fast two days every week, Monday and Thursday.' I said, 'I am able to do more than that.' He said, 'Then fast the fast of Dawud, for it is the most moderate fasting in the sight of Allah: one day fasting and one day breaking the fast. And when he made a promise, he did not break it, and when he met the enemy, he did not flee.'"
