✧ Prohibition of seeking forgiveness for the polytheists

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي الْخَلِيلِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا يَسْتَغْفِرُ لِأَبَوَيْهِ وَهُمَا مُشْرِكَانِ فَقُلْتُ أَتَسْتَغْفِرُ لَهُمَا وَهُمَا مُشْرِكَانِ؟ فَقَالَ أَوَلَمْ يَسْتَغْفِرْ إِبْرَاهِيمُ لِأَبِيهِ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَنَزَلَتْ {وَمَا كَانَ اسْتِغْفَارُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لِأَبِيهِ إِلَّا عَنْ مَوْعِدَةٍ وَعَدَهَا إِيَّاهُ} [التوبة 114]

✧ I heard a man seeking forgiveness for his parents while they were polytheists, so I said: "Do you seek forgiveness for them when they are polytheists?" He said: "Did not Ibrahim seek forgiveness for his father?" I went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him, and it was revealed: {And Ibrahim's seeking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him} [al-Tawbah 114].
