✧ Prohibition of seeking forgiveness for the polytheists

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ وَهُوَ ابْنُ ثَوْرٍ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

لَمَّا حَضَرَتْ أَبَا طَالِبٍ الْوَفَاةُ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَعِنْدَهُ أَبُو جَهْلٍ وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ فَقَالَ أَيْ عَمِّ قُلْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ كَلِمَةً أُحَاجُّ لَكَ بِهَا عِنْدَ اللهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو جَهْلٍ وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ يَا أَبَا طَالِبٍ أَتَرْغَبُ عَنْ مِلَّةِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَلَمْ يَزَالَا يُكَلِّمَانِهِ حَتَّى قَالَ آخِرَ شَيْءٍ كَلَّمَهُمْ بِهِ هُوَ عَلَى مِلَّةِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَأَسْتَغْفِرَنَّ لَكَ مَا لَمْ أُنْهَ عَنْكَ فَنَزَلَتْ {مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوا لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ} [التوبة 113] وَنَزَلَتْ {إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَكِنَّ اللهَ يَهْدِي مَنْ يَشَاءُ} [القصص 56]

✧ When Abu Talib was dying, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon him while Abu Jahl and Abd Allah b. Abi Umayyah were present. He said: "O uncle, say 'There is no god but Allah,' a word by which I will plead for you before Allah." Abu Jahl and Abd Allah b. Abi Umayyah said to him: "O Abu Talib, will you turn away from the religion of Abd al-Muttalib?" They kept talking to him until the last thing he said to them was that he was upon the religion of Abd al-Muttalib. The Prophet ﷺ said: "I will certainly seek forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden from it." Then it was revealed: {It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists} [al-Tawbah 113], and it was revealed: {Indeed, you do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills} [al-Qasas 56].
