✧ Prayer for the Hypocrites

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حُجَيْنُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ عَقِيلٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ

لَمَّا مَاتَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيِّ ابْنِ سَلُولٍ دُعِيَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمَّا قَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَثَبْتُ إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَتُصَلِّي عَلَى ابْنِ أُبَيٍّ وَقَدْ قَالَ يَوْمَ كَذَا وَكَذَا كَذَا وَكَذَا أُعَدِّدُ عَلَيْهِ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَقَالَ «أَخِّرْ عَنِّي يَا عُمَرُ» فَلَمَّا أَكْثَرْتُ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ «إِنِّي خُيِّرْتُ فَاخْتَرْتُ لَوْ عَلِمْتُ أَنِّي إِنْ زِدْتُ عَلَى السَّبْعِينَ غُفِرَ لَهُ لَزِدْتُ عَلَيْهَا» فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ فَمَا مَكَثَ إِلَّا يَسِيرًا حَتَّى نَزَلَتِ الْآيَتَانِ مِنْ بَرَاءَةَ {وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ مَاتَ أَبَدًا وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَى قَبْرِهِ إِنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَمَاتُوا وَهُمْ فَاسِقُونَ} [التوبة 84] فَعَجِبْتُ بَعْدُ مِنْ جُرْأَتِي عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ

✧ When Abdullah b. Ubayy b. Salul died, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was summoned to pray over him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood, I rushed to him, then said, "O Messenger of Allah, will you pray over Ibn Ubayy when he said on such-and-such a day such-and-such?" I enumerated his statements. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, "Step back from me, Umar." When I persisted, he said, "I was given a choice and I chose. If I knew that by increasing beyond seventy [prayers] he would be forgiven, I would have increased." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over him, then departed. Only a little while passed before the two verses from Barā’ah were revealed: {And do not ever pray over any of them who dies, nor stand at his grave; indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient} [al-Tawbah: 84]. I was amazed afterward at my boldness toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that day. And Allah and His Messenger know best.
