أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ خَرَجَ يَوْمًا مُسْتَعْجِلًا إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ وَقَدِ انْخَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَصَلَّى حَتَّى انْجَلَتْ ثُمَّ قَالَ إنَّ أَهْلَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لَا يَنْخَسِفَانِ إِلَّا لِمَوْتِ عَظِيمٍ مِنْ عُظَمَاءِ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ وَإِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لَا يَنْخَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ وَلَكِنَّهُمَا خَلِيقَتَانِ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ يُحْدِثُ اللهُ فِي خَلْقِهِ مَا شَاءَ وَأَيُّهُمَا انْخَسَفَ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى يَنْجَلِيَ أَوْ يُحْدِثَ اللهُ أَمْرًا
Translation

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ: He came out one day hurrying to the mosque when the sun had eclipsed. He prayed until it cleared, then said: "The people of the Jahiliyyah used to say that the sun and the moon do not eclipse except for the death of some great one among the great of the people of the earth. The sun and the moon do not eclipse for the death or life of anyone, but they are two created things among His creation. Allah brings about in His creation whatever He wills. Whichever of them eclipses, pray until it clears or Allah brings about some matter."
