أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ وَعَبْدَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لِأَحْمَدَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ حُبَابٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي نُعَيْمُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ قَالَ
سَمِعْتُ النُّعْمَانَ بْنَ بَشِيرٍ عَلَى مِنْبَرِ حِمْصٍ يَقُولُ «قُمْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ لَيْلَةَ ثَلَاثٍ وَعِشْرِينَ إِلَى ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ قُمْنَا مَعَهُ لَيْلَةَ خَمْسٍ وَعِشْرِينَ إِلَى نِصْفِ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ قُمْنَا معه لَيْلَةَ ِسبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنْ لَا نُدْرِكَ الْفَلَاحَ وَكَانُوا يُسَمُّونَهُ السَّحُورَ»

✧ I heard al-Nu'man b. Bashir on the pulpit of Hims say: "We stood with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the month of Ramadan on the night of the twenty-third until the first third of the night, then we stood with him on the night of the twenty-fifth until half the night, then we stood with him on the night of the twenty-seventh until we thought we would not catch the falah. They used to call it the pre-dawn meal."
