أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْحَارِثِ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ قَالَ انْطَلَقْنَا إِلَى عَائِشَةَ فَاسْتَأْذَنَّا عَلَيْهَا فَدَخَلْنَا قُلْتُ أَنْبِئِينِي
عَنْ قِيَامِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ «أَلَسْتَ تَقْرَأُ هَذِهِ السُّورَةَ يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ؟» قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَتْ «فَإِنَّ اللهَ افْتَرَضَ الْقِيَامَ فِي أَوَّلِ هَذِهِ السُّورَةِ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَأَصْحَابُهُ حَوْلًا حَتَّى انْتَفَخَتْ أَقْدَامُهُمْ وَأَمْسَكَ اللهُ خَاتِمَتَهَا اثْنَيْ عَشْرَ شَهْرًا ثُمَّ أَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ التَّخْفِيفَ فِي آخِرِ هَذِهِ السُّورَةِ فَصَارَ قِيَامُ اللَّيْلِ تَطَوُّعًا بَعْدَ فَرِيضَةٍ» مُخْتَصَرٌ

✧ About the night prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, she said, 'Do you not recite this surah, O you wrapped in garments?' I said, 'Yes.' She said, 'Indeed, Allah made the night prayer obligatory at the beginning of this surah, and the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions stood in prayer for a year until their feet became swollen. Allah withheld its conclusion for twelve months; then Allah ﷻ sent down the lightening at the end of this surah, and the night prayer became voluntary after having been obligatory.' Abridged.
