أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَأَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ ثَقِيفٍ الَّذِي يُقَالُ لَهُ أَبُو عَوْنٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ
قَدِمَ وَفْدُ بَنِي أَسَدٍ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَتَكَلَّمُوا فَقَالُوا قَاتَلَتْكَ مُضَرُ وَلَسْنَا بَأَقَلِّهِمْ عَدَدًا وَلَا أَكَلَّهُمْ شَوْكَةً وَصَلْنَا رَحِمَكَ فَقَالَ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ ؓ «تَكَلَّمُوا هَكَذَا» قَالُوا لَا قَالَ «إِنَّ فِقْهَ هَؤُلَاءِ قَلِيلٌ وَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَنْطِقُ عَلَى أَلْسِنَتِهِمْ» قَالَ عَطَاءٌ فِي حَدِيثِهِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ جَلَّ وَعَزَّ {يَمُنُّونَ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ أَسْلَمُوا} [الحجرات 17] الْآيَةَ

✧ A delegation of Banū Asad came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and spoke, saying: "Muḍar fought against you, and we are not fewer than them in number nor weaker in strength, and we have maintained ties of kinship with you." He said to Abū Bakr and ʿUmar ؓ: "Speak like this." They said: "No." He said: "The understanding of these people is little, and Satan speaks upon their tongues." ʿAṭāʾ said in his narration: So God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: {They consider it a favor to you that they have submitted} [al-Ḥujurāt 17], the verse.
