Sūrat al-Ḥujurāt

أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ حَدَّثَنَا الْعَلَاءُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «أَتَدْرُونَ مَا الْغِيبَةُ» قَالُوا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ «ذِكْرُكَ أَخَاكَ بِمَا يَكْرَهُ» قِيلَ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَانَ فِي أَخِي مَا أَقُولُ؟ قَالَ «إِنْ كَانَ فِيهِ مَا تَقُولُ فَقَدِ اغْتَبْتَهُ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِ فَقَدْ بَهَتَّهُ»

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Do you know what backbiting is?" They said: "God and His Messenger know best." He said: "Your mentioning your brother with what he dislikes." It was said: "What if what I say is true of my brother?" He said: "If what you say is true of him, you have backbitten him, and if it is not true, you have slandered him."
