أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ
أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ قَدِمَ الرُّكَبُ مِنْ بَنِي تَمِيمٍ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ أَمِّرِ الْقَعْقَاعَ بْنَ مَعْبَدٍ وَقَالَ عُمَرُ بَلْ أَمِّرِ الْأَقْرَعَ بْنَ حَابِسٍ فَتَمَارَيَا حَتَّى ارْتَفَعَتْ أَصْوَاتُهُمَا فَنَزَلَتْ فِي ذَلِكَ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تُقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيِ اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ} [الحجرات 1] حَتَّى انْقَضَتِ الْآيَةُ {وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ صَبَرُوا حَتَّى تَخْرُجَ إِلَيْهِمْ لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَهُمْ} [الحجرات 5]

✧ He informed him that a delegation of riders from Banū Tamīm came to the Prophet ﷺ. Abū Bakr ؓ said: "Appoint al-Qaʿqāʿ b. Maʿbad as commander," and ʿUmar said: "Rather, appoint al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis." They argued until their voices rose, and regarding that was revealed: {O you who believe, do not put yourselves forward before God and His Messenger} [al-Ḥujurāt 1] until the verse ended: {And if they had been patient until you came out to them, it would have been better for them} [al-Ḥujurāt 5].
