أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ هِلَالِ بْنِ أُسَامَةَ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ قَالَ

أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ جَارِيَةً لِي كَانَتْ تَرْعَى غَنَمًا لِي فَجِئْتُهَا وَفَقَدْتُ شَاةً مِنَ الْغَنَمِ فَسَأَلْتُهَا فَقَالَتْ أَكَلَهَا الذِّئْبُ فَأَسِفْتُ عَلَيْهَا وَكُنْتُ مِنْ بَنِي آدَمَ فَلَطَمْتُ وَجْهَهَا وَعَلَيَّ رَقَبَةٌ أَفَأُعْتِقُهَا؟ فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَيْنَ اللهُ؟» قَالَتْ فِي السَّمَاءِ قَالَ «فَمَنْ أَنَا؟» قَالَتْ أَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ قَالَ «فَأَعْتِقْهَا»

✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, a slave girl of mine used to tend my sheep. I came to her and missed a sheep from the flock, so I asked her and she said, “The wolf ate it.” I became angry with her, and being a son of Adam, I slapped her face. I owe a slave. Should I free her? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her: “Where is Allah?” She said: “In the heaven.” He said: “Who am I?” She said: “You are the Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Free her.”
