أَخْبَرَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدَةَ عَنْ هِشَامٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِي
أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ مَا أَشَدُّ شَيْءٍ رَأَيْتَ قُرَيْشًا بَلَغُوا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ مَرَّ بِهِمْ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَقَالُوا لَهُ أَنْتَ الَّذِي تَنْهَانَا أَنْ نَعْبُدَ مَا يَعْبُدُ آبَاؤُنَا؟ قَالَ «أَنَا» فَقَامُوا إِلَيْهِ فَأَخَذُوهُ بِمَجَامِعِ ثِيَابِهِ قَالَ فَرَأَيْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ مُحْتَضِنَهُ مِنْ وَرَائِهِ يَصْرُخُ وَإِنَّ عَيْنَيْهِ تَنْضَحَانِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ {أَتَقْتُلُونَ رَجُلًا أَنْ يَقُولَ رَبِّيَ اللهُ} [غافر 28] الْآيَةَ

✧ He was asked: What is the harshest thing you saw the Quraysh do to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: One day he passed by them and they said to him: “Are you the one who forbids us to worship what our fathers worshipped?” He said: “I am.” Then they rose against him and seized him by the collar of his clothes. He said: I saw Abū Bakr embracing him from behind, crying out, with his eyes flowing, saying: {Will you kill a man because he says, “My Lord is Allah”?} [Ghāfir: 28] – the verse.
