أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَينٍ قَالَ

كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي مَسِيرٍ فَتَفَاوَتَ بَيْنَ أَصْحَابِهِ فِي السَّيْرِ فَرَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَوْتَهُ بِهَاتَيْنِ الْآيَتَيْنِ {يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّ زَلْزَلَةَ السَّاعَةِ شَيْءٌ عَظِيمٌ يَوْمَ تَرَوْنَهَا تَذْهَلُ كُلُّ مُرْضِعَةٍ عَمَّا أَرْضَعَتْ وَتَضَعُ كُلُّ ذَاتِ حَمْلٍ حَمْلَهَا وَتَرَى النَّاسَ سُكَارَى وَمَا هُمْ بِسُكَارَى وَلَكِنَّ عَذَابَ اللهِ شَدِيدٌ} [الحج 2] فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ بِذَلِكَ أَصْحَابُهُ عَرَفُوا أَنَّهُ قَوْلٌ يَقُولُهُ فَقَالَ «هَلْ تَدْرُونَ أَيُّ يَوْمٍ ذَاكُمْ؟» قَالُوا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ ذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ يُنَادِي اللهِ فِيهِ يَا آدَمُ ابْعَثْ بَعْثَ النَّارِ فَيَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ وَمَا بَعْثُ النَّارِ؟ فَيَقُولُ مِنْ كُلِّ أَلْفٍ تِسْعُ مِائَةٍ وَتِسْعَةٌ وَتِسْعُونَ فِي النَّارِ وَوَاحِدٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ فَأَبْلَسَ الْقَوْمُ حَتَّى مَا أَوْضَحُوا بِضَاحِكَةٍ فَلَمَّا رَأَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الَّذِي بِأَصْحَابِهِ قَالَ اعْمَلُوا وَأَبْشِرُوا فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ إِنَّكُمْ لَمَعَ خَلِيقَتَيْنِ مَا كَانَتَا مَعَ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا كَثَّرَتَاهُ يَأْجُوجَ وَمَأْجُوجَ وَمَنْ مَاتَ مِنْ بَنِي آدَمَ وَبَنِي إِبْلِيسَ قَالَ فَسُرِّيَ عَنِ الْقَوْمِ بَعْضُ الَّذِي يَجِدُونَ فَقَالَ «اعْمَلُوا وَأَبْشِرُوا فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ مَا أَنْتُمْ فِي النَّاسِ إِلَّا كَالشَّامَةِ فِي جَنْبِ الْبَعِيرِ أَوْ كَالرَّقْمَةِ فِي ذِرَاعِ الدَّابَّةِ»

✧ We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey, and his companions were moving at different paces. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his voice with these two verses: {O people, fear your Lord. Indeed, the earthquake of the Hour is a tremendous thing. On the day you see it, every nursing mother will forget what she nurses, and every pregnant female will miscarry, and you will see people drunk, though they are not drunk, but the punishment of Allah is severe} [al-Ḥajj 1-2]. When his companions heard that, they knew it was a statement he was making. He said: “Do you know which day that is?” They said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “That is the day when Allah will call out: ‘O Ādam, send forth the portion of Hellfire.’ He will say: ‘O Lord, what is the portion of Hellfire?’ He will say: ‘From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine in the Fire and one in Paradise.’” The people became despondent, so much so that not one of them showed a smile. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw what had befallen his companions, he said: “Work hard and rejoice, for by the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muḥammad, you are with two creations that whenever they are with anything, they make it numerous: Yaʾjūj and Maʾjūj, and those who died from the son of Ādam and the son of Iblīs.” Then some of the distress they felt was relieved. He said: “Work hard and rejoice, for by the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muḥammad, you among people are but like a mole on the side of a camel, or like a mark on the foreleg of a beast.”
