أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى عَنْ يَحْيَى حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَنْ أَكْرَمُ النَّاسِ؟ قَالَ «أَتْقَاهُمْ» قَالُوا لَيْسَ عَنْ هَذَا نَسْأَلُكَ قَالَ «يُوسُفُ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ابْنُ نَبِيِّ اللهِ ابْنِ نَبِيِّ اللهِ ابْنِ خَلِيلِ اللهِ» قَالُوا لَيْسَ عَنْ هَذَا نَسْأَلُكَ قَالَ «فَعَنْ مَعَادِنِ الْعَرَبِ تَسْأَلُونِي فَإِنَّ خِيَارَهُمْ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ خِيَارُهُمْ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ إِذَا فَقِهُوا» قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ خَالَفَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ [132] 11186 أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ مِثْلَهُ

Translation

✧ It was said: O Messenger of God, who is the most noble of people? He said: "The most God-fearing of them." They said: We are not asking you about this. He said: "Yusuf, the Prophet of God, son of the Prophet of God, son of the Prophet of God, son of the Friend of God." They said: We are not asking you about this. He said: "Then you are asking me about the origins of the Arabs? The best of them in the pre-Islamic era are the best of them in Islam when they gain understanding." Abu Abd al-Rahman said: Muhammad b. Bishr differed with him. [132] 11186 Ahmad b. Sulayman informed us; Muhammad b. Bishr narrated to us; Ubayd Allah narrated to us from Sa'id from Abu Hurayrah something similar.
