✧ I heard Ka'b b. Malik relate his account when he stayed behind from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the expedition of Tabuk. He said: "While I was sitting in the condition that Allah mentioned of us—my soul had become constricted and the earth, despite its vastness, had closed in on me—I heard a crier on the top of a mountain with the loudest voice: 'O Ka'b b. Malik, rejoice!'" He said: "I fell down in prostration, and I knew that relief had come. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced Allah's acceptance of our repentance when he prayed the dawn prayer, so the people rushed to give us good tidings. Some went toward my two companions with glad tidings, and a man rode a horse to me, and a runner from Aslam hastened and climbed a mountain, and the voice was faster than the horse. When the one whose voice I had heard came to me with good news, I took off my two garments and clothed him with them as a reward—by Allah, I owned nothing else. I borrowed two garments and put them on, then I set out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The people met me in groups, congratulating me on the repentance, saying: 'May Allah's acceptance of your repentance bring you joy.'" Ka'b said: "Until I entered the mosque, and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sitting with the people around him. Talhah b. Ubayd Allah stood up and hurried to me, shook my hand and congratulated me. By Allah, no man among the Muhajirun stood up for me except him, and I will never forget it for Talhah." Ka'b said: "When I greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, while his face was shining with joy: 'Rejoice in the best day that has passed over you since your mother gave birth to you.' I said: 'Is it from you, O Messenger of Allah, or from Allah?' He said: 'No, rather from Allah.' When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pleased, his face would light up as if it were a piece of the moon, and we used to recognize that from him. When I sat before him, I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, part of my repentance is that I divest myself of my wealth as charity to Allah, Blessed and Exalted, and to His Messenger ﷺ.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Keep some of your wealth, for it is better for you.' I said: 'Then I will keep my share at Khaybar.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, Allah only saved me through truthfulness, and part of my repentance is that I will never speak anything but the truth as long as I live.' By Allah, no Muslim has been tested by Allah in truthfulness of speech since I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ better than I have been tested, and you know that I have not reported a lie since I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I hope that Allah will protect me for the rest of my life. Then Allah, Exalted and Glorified, revealed: {Allah has certainly turned in mercy to the Prophet, the Muhajirun, and the Ansar who followed him in the hour of hardship} [al-Tawbah 117]—he recited until {the truthful} [al-Tawbah 119]. By Allah, after He guided me to Islam, Allah has not bestowed upon me any blessing greater in my soul than my truthfulness to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on that day—that I did not lie to him, lest I be destroyed as those who lied to him were destroyed, until revelation came with the worst of what He said about anyone: {They will swear by Allah to you when you return to them so that you may turn away from them} [al-Tawbah 95] until {the defiantly disobedient} [al-Tawbah 96]. Ka'b said: 'We, the three, stayed behind from the affair of those whose excuses the Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted when they swore to him, so he pledged allegiance to them and sought forgiveness for them, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ deferred our affair until Allah decreed concerning it. For that reason Allah, Exalted and Glorified, said: {And [He also turned in mercy] to the three who were left behind} [al-Tawbah 118]. It is not that Allah mentioned our staying behind from the expedition; rather, it is His deferring us and postponing our affair, unlike those who swore to him and made excuses, and he accepted from them—abridged."
