أَخْبَرَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ حَدَّثَنَا غُنْدَرٌ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ
لَمَّا أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِالصَّدَقَةِ تَصَدَّقَ أَبُو عُقَيْلٍ بِنِصْفِ صَاعٍ وَجَاءَ إِنْسَانٌ بِشَيْءٍ أَكْثَرَ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ إِنَّ اللهَ لَغَنِيٌّ عَنْ صَدَقَةِ هَذَا وَمَا فَعَلَ هَذَا الْآخَرُ إِلَّا رِيَاءً فَنَزَلَتِ {الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ} [التوبة 79]

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to give charity, Abu 'Uqayl gave half a sa', and another person brought more than that. The hypocrites said: "Allah has no need of this one's charity, and the other did nothing but show off." So it was revealed: {Those who criticize the volunteers among the believers concerning charities and those who find nothing but their effort} [At-Tawbah: 79].
