أَخْبَرَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي نُعْمٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ قَالَ

بَعَثَ عَلِيٌّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ وَهُوَ بِالْيَمَنِ بِذُهَيْبَةٍ يُهْدِيهَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَسَمَهَا بَيْنَ أَرْبَعَةٍ بَيْنَ الْأَقْرَعِ بْنِ حَابِسٍ الْحَنْظَلِيِّ وَعُيَيْنَةَ بْنِ بَدْرٍ الْفَزَارِيِّ وَعَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ عُلَاثَةَ الْعَامِرِيِّ ثُمَّ أَحَدِ بَنِي كِلَابٍ وَزَيْدٍ الطَّائِيِّ ثُمَّ أَحَدِ بَنِي نَبْهَانَ فَغَضِبَتْ قُرَيْشٌ وَقَالَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى صَنَادِيدُ قُرَيْشٍ فَقَالُوا يُعْطِي صَنَادِيدَ نَجْدٍ وَيَدَعُنَا؟ فَقَالَ إِنِّي إِنَّمَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ لِأَتَأَلَّفَهُمْ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ كَثُّ اللِّحْيَةِ مُشْرِفُ الْوَجْنَتَيْنِ غَائِرُ الْعَيْنَيْنِ نَاتِئُ الْجَبِينِ مَحْلُوقُ الرَّأْسِ فَقَالَ اتَّقِ اللهَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ قَالَ «فَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللهَ إِنْ عَصَيْتُهُ يَأْمَنُنِي عَلَى أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ وَلَا تَأْمَنُونِي؟» قَالَ وَأَدْبَرَ الرَّجُلُ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ فِي قَتْلِهِ يَرَوْنَ أَنَّهُ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا إِنَّ مِنْ ضِئْضِئِ هَذَا قَوْمًا يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ يَقْتُلُونَ أَهْلَ الْإِسْلَامِ وَيَدْعُونَ أَهْلَ الْأَوْثَانِ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الْإِسْلَامِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ لَئِنْ أَدْرَكْتُهُمْ لَأَقْتُلَنَّهُمْ قَتْلَ عَادٍ»

✧ 'Ali ﷺ sent from Yemen a small amount of gold as a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He divided it among four: al-Aqra' b. Habis al-Hanzali, 'Uyaynah b. Badr al-Fazari, 'Alqamah b. 'Ulathah al-'Amiri then one of Banu Kilab, and Zayd al-Ta'i then one of Banu Nabhan. Quraysh became angry—and he said another time: the chiefs of Quraysh—and said: "He gives to the chiefs of Najd and leaves us?" He said: "I only did that to win their hearts." Then a man with a thick beard, prominent cheekbones, sunken eyes, protruding forehead, and shaved head came and said: "Fear Allah, O Muhammad." He said: "Who will obey Allah if I disobey Him? He entrusts me with the people of the earth, and you do not trust me?" He said: The man turned away, and a man from the group asked permission to kill him—they thought he was Khalid b. al-Walid. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No, for from the loins of this man will come a people who recite the Qur'an but it will not pass beyond their throats. They will kill the people of Islam and call to the people of idols. They will pass out of Islam as the arrow passes through the target. If I reach them, I will kill them as 'Ad was killed."
