أَخْبَرَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلَانَ حَدَّثَنَا النَّضْرُ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ أَنَسٍ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ

بَلَغَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ أَصْحَابِهِ شَيْءٌ فَخَطَبَ فَقَالَ «عُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ الْجَنَّةُ وَالنَّارُ فَلَمْ أَرَ كَالْيَوْمِ فِي الْخَيْرِ وَالشَّرِّ وَلَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا أَعْلَمُ لَضَحِكْتُمْ قَلِيلًا وَلَبَكَيْتُمْ كَثِيرًا» قَالَ فَمَا أَتَى عَلَى أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمٌ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُ قَالَ غَطَّوْا رُءُوسَهُمْ وَلَهُمْ خَنَينٌ فَقَامَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ رَضِينَا بِاللهِ رَبًّا وَبِالْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيًّا فَقَامَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَبِي؟ فَقَالَ «أَبُوكَ فُلَانٌ» قَالَ فَنَزَلَتْ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَسْأَلُوا عَنْ أَشْيَاءَ إِنْ تُبْدَ لَكُمْ تَسُؤْكُمْ} [المائدة 101]

✧ Word reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about something concerning his companions, so he delivered a sermon and said: “Paradise and Hell were shown to me, and I have never seen the like of this day in good and evil. If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.” He said: No day came upon the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ more severe than that. He said: They covered their heads and they were sobbing. Then ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, we are content with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad as Prophet. Then that man stood up and said: Who is my father? He said: “Your father is so-and-so.” He said: Then {O you who believe, do not ask about things which, if they are shown to you, will distress you} [al-Māʾidah 101] was revealed.
