أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي بَعْضِ أَسْفَارِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِالْبَيْدَاءِ أَوْ بِذَاتِ الْجَيْشِ انْقَطَعَ عِقْدٌ لِي فَأَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى الْتِمَاسِهِ وَأَقَامَ النَّاسُ مَعَهُ وَلَيْسُوا عَلَى مَاءٍ وَلَيْسَ مَعَهُمْ مَاءٌ فَأَتَى النَّاسُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ ؓ فَقَالُوا أَلَا تَرَى مَا صَنَعَتْ عَائِشَةُ أَقَامَتْ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَبِالنَّاسِ وَلَيْسُوا عَلَى مَاءٍ وَلَيْسَ مَعَهُمْ مَاءٌ؟ فَجَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى فَخِذِي قَدْ نَامَ فَقَالَ أَحَبَسْتِ رَسُولَ اللهِ وَالنَّاسَ وَلَيْسُوا عَلَى مَاءٍ وَلَيْسَ مَعَهُمْ مَاءٌ؟ قَالَتْ فَعَاتَبَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَقَالَ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ أَنْ يَقُولَ وَجَعَلَ يَطْعَنُ بِيَدِهِ فِي خَاصِرَتِي فَمَا يَمْنَعُنِي مِنَ التَّحَرُّكِ إِلَّا مَكَانُ رَأْسِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى فَخِذِي حَتَّى أَصْبَحَ عَلَى غَيْرِ مَاءٍ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ آيَةَ التَّيَمُّمِ {فَتَيَمَّمُوا} [النساء 43] قَالَ أُسَيْدُ بْنُ حُضَيْرٍ مَا هِيَ بِأَوَّلِ بَرَكَتِكُمْ يَا آلَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ قَالَ فَبَعَثْنَا الْبَعِيرَ الَّذِي كُنْتِ عَلَيْهِ فَوَجَدْنَا الْعِقْدَ تَحْتَهُ

✧ We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his journeys until when we were at al-Baydāʾ or at Dhāt al-Jaysh, a necklace of mine broke. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed to look for it, and the people stayed with him, and they were not at a water source and had no water with them. The people came to Abu Bakr ؓ and said, 'Do you not see what ʿĀʾishah has done? She has detained the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people, and they are not at a water source and have no water with them.' Abu Bakr came while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sleeping with his head on my thigh and said, 'Have you detained the Messenger of Allah and the people when they are not at a water source and have no water with them?' She said: Abu Bakr rebuked me and said whatever Allah willed him to say, and he began poking my side with his hand. Nothing prevented me from moving except the place of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ head on my thigh. He remained until morning without water, and Allah ﷻ sent down the verse of tayammum: {so perform tayammum} [al-Nisāʾ 43]. Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr said, 'This is not the first of your blessings, O family of Abu Bakr.' She said: We sent the camel that I had been riding, and we found the necklace beneath it.
