أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْأَصْبَهَانِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَعْقِلٍ قَالَ جَلَسْتُ فِي هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ إِلَى كَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ {§فَفِدْيَةٌ مِنْ صِيَامٍ} [البقرة 196] قَالَ

كَعْبٌ فِيَّ نَزَلَتْ وَكَانَ بِي أَذًى مِنْ رَأْسِي فَحُمِلْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَالْقَمْلُ يَتَنَاثَرُ عَلَى وَجْهِي فَقَالَ «مَا كُنْتُ أَرَى أَنَّ الْجَهْدَ بَلَغَ بِكَ مَا أَرَى أَتَجِدُ شَاةً؟» قَالَ لَا فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {فَفِدْيَةٌ مِنْ صِيَامٍ أَوْ صَدَقَةٍ أَوْ نُسُكٍ} [البقرة 196] فَالصَّوْمُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَيَّامٍ وَالصَّدَقَةُ عَلَى سِتَّةِ مَسَاكِينَ لِكُلِّ مِسْكِينٍ نِصْفُ صَاعٍ وَالنُّسُكُ شَاةٌ

Translation

✧ Ka'b said: It was revealed concerning me. I had an ailment in my head, so I was carried to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while lice were scattering over my face. He said, 'I did not think that hardship had reached you to the extent I see. Do you have a sheep?' He said, 'No.' So this verse was revealed: {Then a ransom of fasting, or charity, or sacrifice} [al-Baqarah: 196]. Thus fasting is three days, charity is for six poor persons, for each poor person half a sa', and the sacrifice is a sheep.
