أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي وَكِيعٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ كُنْتُ
أَسْمَعُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَا يَمُوتُ حَتَّى يُخَيِّرَ بَيْنَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ فَأَخَذْتُهُ بُحَّةٌ فِي مَرَضِهِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ {مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ وَحَسُنَ أُولَئِكَ رَفِيقًا} [النساء 69] فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ خُيِّرَ

✧ I heard that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not die until he was given the choice between this world and the Hereafter. Then he developed hoarseness in the illness in which he died, and I heard him reciting: “With those whom Allah has favored among the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous, and excellent are those as companions” [Quran 4:69]. So I thought that he had been given the choice.
