✧ States of the Dying Person

وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ هُوَ الْجُعْفِيُّ، عَنِ ابْنِ سَابِطٍ هُوَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَابِطٍ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ؓ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ -:

تَحَدَّثُوا عَنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ، فَإِنَّهُ كَانَتْ فِيهِمْ أَعَاجِيبُ. ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ يُحَدِّثُ قَالَ: خَرَجَتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْهُمْ، فَأَتَوْا مَقْبَرَةً مِنْ مَقَابِرِهِمْ فَقَالُوا: لَوْ صَلَّيْنَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ، وَدَعَوْنَا اللهَ تَعَالَى يُخْرِجُ إِلَيْنَا بَعْضَ الْأَمْوَاتِ يُخْبِرُنَا عَنِ الْمَوْتِ ؟ قَالَ: فَفَعَلُوا، فَبَيْنَمَا هُمْ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ أَطْلَعَ رَجُلٌ رَأْسَهُ مِنْ قَبْرٍ حَبَشِيٍّ بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهِ أَثَرُ السُّجُودِ، فَقَالَ: يَا هَؤُلَاءِ، مَا أَرَدْتُمْ إِلَيَّ، فَوَاللهِ لَقَدْ مُتُّ مُنْذُ مِائَةِ سَنَةٍ، فَمَا سَكَنَتْ عَنِّي حَرَارَةُ الْمَوْتِ حَتَّى كَانَ الْآنَ، فَادْعُوا اللهَ تَعَالَى أَنْ يُعِيدَنِي كَمَا كُنْتُ

✧ They were talking about the Children of Israel, for there were wonders among them. Then he began to narrate, saying: A group of them went out and came to one of their graveyards. They said: What if we pray two rak'ahs and ask God Almighty to bring out one of the dead to tell us about death? He said: So they did. While they were thus, a man raised his head from a grave—an Abyssinian, between whose eyes was the trace of prostration. He said: O you people, what do you want from me? By God, I died a hundred years ago, and the heat of death has not left me until now. So ask God Almighty to return me as I was.
