✧ Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas ؓ dispatched Nadlah b. 'Amr al-Ansari ؓ with three hundred men from the Muhajirun and the Ansar. They raided Hulwan and conquered it, capturing much booty and many prisoners. They came driving what was with them while they were between two mountains, until the afternoon prayer overtook them. Nadlah ؓ said to them: 'Turn toward the foot of the mountain,' and they did so. Then Nadlah ؓ stood and called the adhan, saying: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar.' A voice from the mountain answered him, with no visible form: 'You have proclaimed greatness greatly, O Nadlah.' He said: 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah.' It said: 'You have been sincere, O Nadlah, with true sincerity.' He said: 'I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.' It said: 'A prophet was sent after whom there is no prophet.' He said: 'Come to prayer.' It said: 'An obligation that has been ordained.' He said: 'Come to success.' It said: 'Successful is the one who comes to it and perseveres in it.' He said: 'The prayer is about to begin.' It said: 'Endurance is for the community of Muhammad ﷺ, and upon its heads the Hour will come.' When they had prayed, Nadlah ؓ stood and said: 'O good, pleasant, beautiful speech, we have heard good speech. Are you from the angels of Allah, or a tayf (spirit), or a resident? Appear to us and speak with us, for we are a delegation of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and a delegation of His Prophet ﷺ.' Then an old man emerged from one of those mountain passes, white-haired and white-bearded, with a head like a millstone, long-bearded, in two worn white woolen garments. He said: 'Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.' They returned his greeting. Nadlah said to him: 'Who are you, may Allah have mercy on you?' He said: 'I am Zarnab b. Tharmala, the deputy of the righteous servant Jesus son of Mary. He prayed for me to remain until his descent from heaven, and my abode is in this mountain. Convey my greetings to 'Umar b. al-Khattab, the Commander of the Faithful ؓ, and tell him: Be steadfast, aim rightly, and draw near, for the matter has drawn close. And beware, O 'Umar, if certain traits appear in the community of Muhammad ﷺ while you are among them, then flee, flee.' Nadlah ؓ said: 'O Zarnab! May Allah have mercy on you.'
