وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ: حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ - هُوَ ابْنُ هَارُونَ - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْأَشْهَبِ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَهُ يَقُولُ:
لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ الَّذِينَ تَكَلَّمُوا فِي عُثْمَانَ ؓ وَتَخَاصَمُوا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، حَتَّى مَا أَرَى أَدِيمَ السَّمَاءِ، وَإِنَّ إِنْسَانًا مِنْ حُجَرِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَشَارَ بِمُصْحَفٍ، وَقَالَ: أَلَمْ تَعْلَمُوا أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ بَرِيءٌ مِمَّنْ فَارَقَ دِينَهُ وَكَانُوا شِيَعًا: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ فَرَّقُوا دِينَهُمْ وَكَانُوا شِيَعًا لَسْتَ مِنْهُمْ فِي شَيْءٍ.... الْآيَةَ.

✧ I saw those who spoke against ʿUthmān ؓ and quarreled in the mosque until I could not see the surface of the sky. A person from the chambers of the Prophet ﷺ pointed with a muṣḥaf and said: 'Do you not know that Muḥammad ﷺ is innocent of those who split their religion and became sects: "Indeed, those who have divided their religion and become sects—you are not associated with them in anything..." the verse.'
