✧ Abdullah b. Salam ؓ used to come from a piece of land of his on a she-donkey or a donkey on Friday, arriving early. When he finished the prayer, he would go to his land. When the people stirred up against Uthman ؓ, Abdullah b. Salam ؓ said to them, 'Do not kill him; seek his repentance. By the One in whose hand is my soul, no nation has killed its prophet and then God set their affairs right until they shed the blood of seventy thousand, and no nation has killed a caliph and then God set their affairs right until they shed the blood of forty thousand. No nation has ever perished except after they raised the Quran against the ruler.' Then he said to them, 'Do not kill him; seek his repentance.' He said: But they did not consider what he said and killed him. He said: Then he sat on the road of Ali b. Abi Talib ؓ until Ali ؓ came to him. He said to him, 'Where do you intend to go?' He said, 'Iraq.' He said, 'Do not go to Iraq. Keep to the pulpit of the Messenger of God ﷺ and adhere to it. I do not know whether it will save you. By God, if you leave it, you will never see it again.' Those around him said, 'Let us kill him.' Ali ؓ said, 'Abdullah b. Salam is a righteous man among us.' Ibn Mughaffal said: I had asked Ibn Salam for permission regarding a piece of land next to his land to buy it. He said to me afterwards, 'This is the beginning of forty years, and after it there will be peace, so buy it.'
