قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الْأَحْوَلِ قَالَ:

سَأَلَ صُبَيْحٌ أَبَا عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيَّ، وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ فَقَالَ لَهُ: هَلْ أَدْرَكْتَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، أَسْلَمْتُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَدَّيْتُ لَهُ ثَلَاثَ صَدَقَاتٍ، وَلَمْ أَلْقَهُ، وَغَزَوْتُ عَلَى عَهْدِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ عِدَّةَ غَزَوَاتٍ، شَهِدْتُ فَتْحَ الْقَادِسِيَّةِ، وَجَلُولَاءَ، وَنِهَاوَنْدَ، وَالْيَرْمُوكَ، وَأَذْرَبِيجَانَ، وَمِهْرَانَ، وَرُسْتُمَ، فَكُنَّا نَأْكُلُ السَّمْنَ وَنَتْرُكُ الْوَدَكَ. قَالَ: فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الظُّرُوفِ ؟ فَقَالَ: لَمْ يَكُنْ يُسْأَلُ عَنْهَا. يَعْنِي: ظُرُوفَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ

Translation

✧ Subayh asked Abu Uthman al-Nahdi while I was listening: "Did you meet the Prophet ﷺ?" He said: "Yes. I accepted Islam during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I paid him three charities, but I did not meet him. And I went on several campaigns during the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab ؓ. I witnessed the conquest of al-Qadisiyyah, Jalula', Nihawand, al-Yarmuk, Adharbijan, Mihran, and Rustum. We used to eat ghee and leave the fat." He said: "Then I asked him about vessels." He said: "They were not asked about." Meaning the vessels of the polytheists.
