✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, I said to a man of the Ansar: Come, let us ask the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for today they are many. He said: How astonishing of you, O Ibn 'Abbas! Do you think people will need you while among the people are Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ such as they? He said: So I left that, and I began asking the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about hadith. If I heard of a man, I would go to him while he was napping, and I would pillow my cloak at his door, with the wind blowing dust upon me. He would come out, see me, and say: O cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, what brought you? Why did you not send for me so I could come to you? I would say: No, I am more entitled to come to you. Then I would ask him about the hadith. That Ansari man lived until he saw me with people gathered around me asking me, and he said: This youth was wiser than I.
