حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ، هُوَ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ، ثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ مَسْعَدَةَ، عَنِ الْمُنْذِرِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ، عَنْ عِلْبَاءَ بْنِ أَحْمَرَ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ:
خَطَبْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ابْنَتَهُ فَاطِمَةَ ؓ فَبَاعَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ دِرْعًا لَهُ، وَبَعْضَ مَا بَاعَ مِنْ مَتَاعِهِ، فَبَلَغَ أَرْبَعَمِائَةِ دِرْهَمٍ وَثَمَانِينَ دِرْهَمًا. وَأَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ يَجْعَلَ ثُلُثَيْهِ فِي الطِّيبِ، وَثُلُثًا فِي الثِّيَابِ، وَمَجَّ ﷺ فِي جَرَّةٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ، فَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يَغْتَسِلُوا بِهِ، وَأَمَرَهَا ﷺ أَنْ لَا تَسْبِقَهُ بِرَضَاعِ وَلَدِهَا، قَالَ: فَسَبَقَتْهُ ﷺ بِرَضَاعِ الْحُسَيْنِ ؓ، قَالَ: وَأَمَّا الْحَسَنُ ؓ فَإِنَّهُ ﷺ وَضَعَ فِي فِيهِ شَيْئًا لَا أَدْرِي مَا هُوَ، كَانَ أَعْلَمَ الرَّجُلَيْنِ

✧ I proposed to the Prophet ﷺ for his daughter Fatimah ؓ. 'Ali ؓ sold a coat of mail of his and some of what he sold of his belongings, and it reached four hundred dirhams and eighty dirhams. The Prophet ﷺ commanded that two-thirds of it be spent on perfume and one-third on clothes. He ﷺ blew into a jar of water and commanded them to bathe with it. And he commanded her ﷺ not to precede him in nursing her child. He said: But she preceded him ﷺ in nursing Husayn ؓ. He said: As for Hasan ؓ, he ﷺ placed something in his mouth—I do not know what it was. He was the more learned of the two men.
