وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُوسَى، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ جَبْرٍ، عَنِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ مُصْعَبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ ؓ قَالَ:
لَمَّا افْتَتَحَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَكَّةَ انْصَرَفَ إِلَى الطَّائِفِ فَحَاصَرَهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ أَوْ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ فَلَمْ يَفْتَحْهَا، ثُمَّ أَوْغَلَ رَوْحَةً أَوْ غَدْوَةً فَنَزَلَ ثُمَّ هَجَّرَ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، إِنِّي فَرَطُكُمْ، وَأُوصِيكُمْ بِعِتْرَتِي خَيْرًا، وَإِنَّ مَوْعِدَكُمُ الْحَوْضُ، فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَتُقِيمُنَّ الصَّلَاةَ، وَلَتُؤْتُنَّ الزَّكَاةَ، أَوْ لَأَبْعَثَنَّ إِلَيْكُمْ رَجُلًا مِنِّي أَوْ كَنَفْسِي فَلَيَضْرِبَنَّ أَعْنَاقَ مُقَاتِلِيهِمْ، وَلَيَسْبِيَنَّ ذَرَارِيَّهُمْ ". قَالَ: فَرَأَى النَّاسُ أَنَّهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَوْ عُمَرُ ؓ فَأَخَذَ ﷺ يَدَ عَلِيٍّ ؓ فَقَالَ: " هَذَا

✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ conquered Makkah, he turned to al-Ṭāʾif and besieged it for nineteen or eighteen days but did not conquer it. Then he went deep at midday or morning, dismounted, and then rested during the heat. He said: O people, I precede you, and I commend my family to you with good. Your appointment is at the Pond. By Him in whose hand is my soul, you shall establish prayer and give zakāh, or I shall send to you a man from me or like myself who will strike the necks of their fighters and take their offspring captive. He said: The people thought he meant Abū Bakr or ʿUmar ؓ. But he ﷺ took the hand of ʿAlī ؓ and said: This one.
