✧ When it was revealed: "Alif Lam Mim. The Romans have been defeated in the nearest land..." the verse, some people met Abu Bakr ؓ and said: "Do you not see your companion claiming that the Romans will defeat Persia?" He ؓ said: "The Messenger of God ﷺ has spoken the truth." They said: "Shall we make a bet with you on that?" He said: "Yes." Abu Bakr ؓ said: "That reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: 'What did you intend by this?' He said: 'O Messenger of God, I did it only to affirm God, Exalted is He, and His Messenger ﷺ.' He said: 'Then challenge them and make the stakes great, and set it for a few years. For if the years pass until the Romans prevail over Persia...' He said: 'Abu Bakr ؓ passed by them and said: 'Would you like to repeat? For repeating is better.' They said: 'Yes.' So they bet with him and increased the stakes. The years had not passed before the Romans prevailed over Persia, and he ؓ took the stakes and brought them to the Prophet ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'This is for the noble camels.'
