"I said to the Prophet: 'I am an old man and blind; my house is far away, and I have no one to lead me. Is there any concession (for me not to have to attend the prayer in the mosque)?' He said: 'Can you hear the call?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then I do not find any concession for you.'"

machine translationIbn al-Qaṭṭān found the ḥadīth of Ibn Umm Maktūm to be defective (muʿall) and said: "Because the ones who narrate from him are Abū Razīn and Ibn Abī Laylā. As for Abū Razīn, we do not know his age, but the most senior of the Companions he met was ʿAlī, may God be pleased with him, whereas Ibn Umm Maktūm was killed at al-Qādisiyyah in the time of ʿUmar, may God be pleased with him. And Ibn Abī Laylā was born six years before the end of the caliphate of ʿUmar, may God Almighty be pleased with him." End of quote. The author of al-Talwīḥ said: There is something to examine in this, from several aspects. First, his statement that we do not know Abū Razīn's birth date is not sound, because Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned that he was older in age than Abū Wāʾil, and it is known that Abū Wāʾil met our master the Messenger of God ﷺ; accordingly, his narrating from Ibn Umm Maktūm cannot be denied. Second, his statement that the highest he has is narration from ʿAlī is rejected by his sound narration from Ibn Masʿūd, may God Almighty be pleased with him. Third, his statement that Ibn Umm Maktūm died at al-Qādisiyyah is rejected by the words of Ibn Ḥibbān in the Book of the Companions: he witnessed al-Qādisiyyah, then returned to Medina and died there during the caliphate of ʿUmar, may God Almighty be pleased with him. Fourth, his statement that the age of Ibn Abī Laylā does not allow for him to have heard from ʿUmar is rejected by the words of Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī, when his son asked him whether ʿAbd al-Raḥmān heard from Bilāl. He said: Bilāl left for Syria early, in the caliphate of ʿUmar. So if he saw him as a child, here is Abū Ḥātim, who did not deny his hearing from Bilāl, who died in the year 17 or 18, but rather allowed it; so how can it be denied from ʿUmar, may God Almighty be pleased with him? Al-Bayhaqī narrated it from the ḥadīth of Ibn Shihāb al-Khayyāṭ, from al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Musayyab, from Ibn Umm Maktūm: "I said: O Messenger of God, I have a guide who does not stay with me for these two prayers, the ʿishāʾ and the dawn prayer." He said: "If those who stay behind from them knew what is in them, they would come to them even if crawling."
