What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Khaṭṭābī

machine translational-Khaṭṭābī hinted at the weakness (ḍaʿf) of the hadith.

  • Khaṭṭābī

machine translational-Khaṭṭābī said: Some scholars have criticised the chain of transmission of this hadith, and claimed that it is not established from the Messenger of God ﷺ.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationIbn ʿAbd al-Barr said: The hadith on the sale of the cat is not established as attributed to the Prophet (marfūʿ).

  • Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá b. Sharaf al-Nawawī

machine translational-Nawawī responded to them both and said: This is a mistake on their part, for the hadith is in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim with a sound (ṣaḥīḥ) chain.

  • Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá b. Sharaf al-Nawawī

machine translationAnd the statement of Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr that no one narrated it from Abū al-Zubayr other than Ḥammād is also a mistake, for Muslim narrated it in his Ṣaḥīḥ through the narration of Maʿqil from Abū al-Zubayr. So these two trustworthy (thiqah) narrators narrated it from Abū al-Zubayr, and he is trustworthy (thiqah).
