What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

    machine translationIt is not established.

  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationIt is not established (lā yathbut), or he said: until it is established. Then he said: Ṣāliḥ, the freed slave of al-Tawʾamah, narrated it, and he is nothing in what he was alone in narrating.

  • Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá b. Sharaf al-Nawawī

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

    machine translationA gross error.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationThe hadith of Abū Hurayrah was narrated solely by Ṣāliḥ b. Abī Ṣāliḥ, the freed slave of al-Tawʾamah, and he is not a proof because of his weakness. Even if his hadith were authentic, it would contain no proof.

  • M. ibn Ḥibbān al-Bustī

machine translationṢāliḥ became confused (ikhtalaṭa) at the end of his life, and his later narrations could not be distinguished from his earlier ones. Then he mentioned this hadith of his and said: it is false (bāṭil). How could the Messenger say that, when he prayed over Suhayl b. Bayḍāʾ in the mosque?

  • Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá b. Sharaf al-Nawawī

machine translationOne of them is that it is weak (ḍaʿīf) and it is not valid to use it as evidence.

  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationThis is a weak (ḍaʿīf) hadith. Ṣāliḥ, the freed slave of al-Tawʾamah, was alone in narrating it, and he is weak.

  • Abū Daʾūd

machine translationAbū Dāwūd transmitted this hadith and was silent about it, so the least that can be said is that it is fair (ḥasan) in his view, because he accepted it.

  • Qurṭubī

machine translationIn its chain is Ṣāliḥ, the freed slave of al-Tawʾamah, whose hadith had become confused late in life. Mālik said of him: he is not trustworthy (laysa bi-thiqah). Others said: his hadith from before the confusion is sound. This hadith is among those that Ibn Abī Dhiʾb narrated from him before the confusion, according to what Abū Aḥmad b. ʿAdī and other leading hadith scholars said.

machine translationThis is among the objectionable narrations (munkarāt) of Ṣāliḥ, and the imams criticised him because of it and said that he is weak.

  • al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī

machine translationThe preserved (maḥfūẓ) wording is "he has nothing."

machine translationHe counted it among the objectionable narrations (munkarāt) of Ṣāliḥ.

  • Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá b. Sharaf al-Nawawī

machine translationWeak (ḍaʿīf); it is not valid to use it as evidence.
