✧ “Shall I not teach you a surah the like of which has not been sent down in the Torah, nor in the Gospel, nor in the Criterion?” I said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Perhaps you will not leave through that door until I tell you about it.” So I stood up with him, and he began to talk to me while my hand was in his hand. I began to walk slowly, disliking that he should go out before he told me about it. When I drew near the door, I said, “O Messenger of Allah, the surah you promised me.” He said, “How do you begin when you stand for prayer?” He said, “So I recited the Opening of the Book.” He said, “It is that, it is that, and it is the seven oft-repeated verses about which Allah said: ‘And We have certainly given you seven of the oft-repeated and the great Qur’an’ — it is that which I have been given [and granted].”

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationThere was disagreement about al-ʿAlāʾ in this hadith, as you see, in the chain and in the text. I think there was something in his memory, and God knows best. Ibn Abī Shaybah and Yūsuf b. Mūsā have transmitted it well, from Abū Usāmah, from ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Jaʿfar.
