أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا بُنْدَارٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ الثَّقَفِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ:

لَمَّا كَثُرَ النَّاسُ ذَكَرُوا أَنْ يَعْلَمُوا وَقْتَ الصَّلَاةِ بِشَيْءٍ يَعْرِفُونَهُ، فَذَكَرُوا أَنْ يُنَوِّرُوا نَارًا أَوْ يَضْرِبُوا نَاقُوسًا، فَأُمِرَ بِلَالٌ أَنْ يَشْفَعَ الْأَذَانَ وَيُوتِرَ الْإِقَامَةَ

Translation

✧ When the people increased, they mentioned that they should know the time of prayer by something they recognize. They mentioned lighting a fire or striking a bell. Then Bilal was ordered to make the call to prayer even and the commencement single.
